Conferencia “Technology Progress for Transportation Electrification - Current trends and future strategies”

Temario:
The automotive and aerospace industries are facing similar challenges in terms of improving emissions, fuel economy, and cost. Another similarity is the move towards replacing mechanical and pneumatic systems with electrical systems, thus transitioning toward “more electric” architectures.

To meet these challenges in the automotive industry, significant work has been done in the areas of electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles.
In the case of airplanes, more electric architecture is the emerging trend. The intent is to move as many loads as possible to electrical power, resulting in simpler systems leading to the potential for lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions, reduced maintenance, and possibly lower costs.

This presentation examines the progress of the electric/hybrid vehicles and Electric/More Electric Aircraft systems over the years and the present status of the technology of these systems that lead to the commercial viability. The presentation also covers the more electrified personal transportation systems that will lead to flying cars that could go on the road and also in the air with vertical take-off and landing. A brief overview of the technologies that enable more electrification of transportation will also be addressed.

Orador: Dr. Kaushik Rajashekara, University of Texas at Dallas.
Dr. Rajashekara has applied his knowledge of power electronics and technical expertise to create propulsion systems in automobiles, airplanes and industrial applications that run more efficiently, producing fewer emissions and using fewer natural resources.

He is Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair in Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Texas at Dallas.
He joined UT Dallas after several years with companies such as Asea Brown Boveri, General Motors Co. and Rolls-Royce Corp.
He joined Delphi, then a division of General Motors, in 1989 where he worked on propulsion systems for electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. He was the lead engineer on power electronics for the propulsion system for GM EV1, the first electric vehicle that was commercially available in the United States.
He then became chief scientist for propulsion, fuel cell, and advanced energy systems.
Rajashekara joined Rolls-Royce as the chief technologist for electric power and control systems.

Dr. Rajashekara earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. He was an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science and an adjunct professor at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE and SAE International.
His contributions have earned numerous awards, including induction into the Delphi Innovation Hall of Fame, the 2006 Gerald Kliman Innovator Award, 2009 IEEE Industry Applications Society Outstanding Achievement Award and 2013 IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award. He holds more than 30 U.S. patents, and he has given more than 100 invited presentations in more than 40 countries.
